Spring = Hayfever?
Spring is just around the corner and this is the time of year practitioners see a dramatic increase in hayfever cases.
Allergic rhinitis or hay fever is defined as a symptom complex characterized by seasonal or perennial sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, itching, throat and sinus infections, asthmatic symptoms and eye symptoms such as conjunctivitis, irritation, and runny eyes.
According to the National Health Survey 2004-5, allergic rhinitis was the most prevalent condition for young people aged 15–24 years (19%), with 8% in the 0-14 year age-group affected. The incidence is 18.4% in adults over 18 years of age.
Its prevalence has doubled over the past 25 years.
In terms of location, ACT residents are most affected by hay fever, closely followed by SA, WA and VIC residents. NSW and QLD natives have the lowest levels of incidence.
Allergic disorders such as hayfever, asthma, and eczema seems to be increasing in many Western countries.
In terms of natural treatments, there are several effective alternative options available to the traditional medication-motivated approaches. Firstly, we can use homeopathic antihistamine which is just as effective as medicinal antihistamine but without the horrible side-effects. Depending on your symptoms, we can also prescribe constitutional remedies to help you get rid of the hayfever once and for all. Some cases may be helped by strengthening the mucosal membranes and desensitising you to the substance which causes the hayfever if it is known.
